Faster WW Benefits from 2026: Implications for Commuters in Haaglanden

Commuters from Rijswijk who travel daily via the A13 and A4 will receive their WW benefit faster from 2026. The daily wage calculation and additional earnings rules will be simplified. What exactly is changing?

2 min leestijd

More than ten thousand commuters from Rijswijk travel daily via the A13, A4 and A12 to offices in Den Haag or Delft. In the event of unexpected job loss, the waiting period for a first WW benefit can cause additional stress. The reform effective 1 July 2026 addresses this delay and simultaneously simplifies the calculations.

Faster WW Benefit Payment

Through direct linkage with payroll systems, the UWV will pay the first benefit within two weeks. This represents a significant improvement compared with the current four to eight weeks. For residents of Generaal Spoorlaan or nearby neighbourhoods, this prevents acute payment problems.

Daily Wage Calculation Simplified

The daily wage will henceforth be based on the average of the last twelve months. Holiday allowance is included as standard, one-off bonuses are spread out and the maximum daily wage rises to € 287.50. Seasonal workers no longer need to request a separate calculation. This reduces disputes before the Rechtbank Den Haag when a benefit is contested.

Additional Earnings Threshold Relaxed

Up to forty per cent of the previous wage may be earned additionally without the entire benefit being forfeited. Only the excess is deducted. This makes it easier to start part-time work, for example as a commuter who temporarily travels less via the A12.

Adjusted Job-Search Obligation

Employees over sixty with thirty years of employment history need to apply for jobs less frequently. The UWV draws up a personal plan with the client that allows room for retraining. This trajectory can also be discussed during an initial meeting in Rijswijk.

Unchanged Elements

The duration of the benefit remains dependent on employment history: minimum three, maximum twenty-four months. Culpability in the case of summary dismissal (ontslag op staande voet) remains a strict condition for rejection.

Preparation for Employers in the Region

  • Test HR packages for compatibility with the new UWV linkage
  • Have settlement agreements (vaststellingsovereenkomsten) reviewed by a specialist
  • Inform employees about the new additional earnings possibilities

Practical Tips for Employees

Anyone who becomes unemployed after 1 July 2026 falls directly under the new rules. Ongoing benefits will be converted, usually favourably. A free initial check is possible via the Juridisch Loket Den Haag or by visiting the Arslan office at Generaal Spoorlaan 35 in Rijswijk.
