What is an unemployment benefit?
The WW (Unemployment Act) provides a temporary benefit to employees who lose their job through no fault of their own. This benefit helps you financially while you search for a new position. You can apply for WW via the UWV.
Conditions for an unemployment benefit

When no entitlement to WW?
You will not receive an unemployment benefit if:
- You have resigned without valid reason
- Dismissal is your own fault (urgent cause)
- You are not available for a job
- You do not meet the weekly requirement
- You were active as self-employed
Steps for application
- Register as job seeker via werk.nl of UWV
- Submit the WW application within 7 days after your last working day
- Log in to Mijn UWV with your DigiD
- Complete the online application form
- Attach the requested documents
- UWV will decide within 4 to 8 weeks

Late with application?
If you submit the application later than one week after your last working day, the start date of your benefit may be postponed. This means financial loss. In exceptional situations, UWV may show leniency.
Can I receive WW after my own resignation?
Generally no, unless you had a valid reason (for example unsafe working conditions) and can prove it.
What if my employer goes bankrupt?
In that case, you can still apply for WW. UWV takes over the financial obligations and pays any outstanding salary if applicable.
Am I entitled to WW after a temporary contract?
Yes, as soon as your temporary contract ends and you meet the conditions, you can apply for an unemployment benefit.
